Volunteer with Us!

Volunteering with us is very rewarding and is an opportunity to give back to your community and help our senior neighbors as they age in place.  Our volunteers come from all walks of life and have many varied talents and interests, the biggest being the desire to help others.

Our volunteers provide many services to the members, but only those they would like to provide.  Transportation to and from medical appointments, hairdressers and barbers, grocery shopping and running errands are some of the services most requested.  Some members need a little help with small chores around the house or yard (not housecleaning!), a friendly visit or someone to play a game or do a puzzle with them, some computer or technology assistance, or just a friendly call to check in.  Our volunteers may also help with special projects or assistance with some of our office duties.

It is most important to know that our volunteers only do services they would like to do and on their own personal schedules.  Some volunteers provide services once a week, some once a month, some only during certain seasons of the year.  There is no obligation to provide a service if it doesn't fit their schedules or interests.

Many volunteers feel that one of the benefits is meeting and getting to know some very interesting people and hear some of their life stories and experiences.  Many of them are very entertaining!  The members are all very appreciative of the help we provide and the kindness and understanding our volunteers show to them.

In order to join our volunteer program, just fill out the brief application form and we will contact you to arrange an interview.  We perform background checks for all of the volunteers and speak with references as well, to be sure our members are safe.  We provide training, guidelines, and protocols to make volunteering as pleasant and enjoyable as possible.

Testimonials

“I’m an 82-year-old widow, determined to continue aging in place, though living alone.  Just as I was beginning to feel anxiety-what to do about outdoor winter work, I learned about Portland Area Villages.  The needs their services cover are broad.  Simply knowing that this wonderful volunteer community is out there, ready to help:  that’s a relief.  Enough to make me feel at ease.  Reassured.”

“Portland Area Villages is a wonderful experience.  The drivers and volunteers are positive and caring.  Everything is very timely and done well.  It’s a chance to be part of a new network in Portland that will give a sense of community over time.”

~ Karen, age 68

“It’s wonderful to be part of an Aging in Place Village.  I hope seniors will be able to take full advantage of all that is offered to them.  Staying in your own home is the primary goal.”

~ Leah, age 94
